The field of psychology can be used to achieve my goal of social justice to influence people to do the right thing. The number one thing I have learned about psychology is that you can influence people in a variety of ways. The most interesting part is that you could change the smallest things, like in the environment, and even that can cause a different response. I think psychology is a good tool to get people to either agree with you or convince them to do the right things
The huge root cause behind sweatshops is greed, and wanting more and more money while at the same time saving some. This constant want for accumulating money can almost be referred to as an addiction. According to Leon F Seltzer Ph.D., “ For that, frankly, is where the dopamine is: the master molecule of pleasure and motivation. And the “end” for them is simply the high (or dopamine release) they receive each time they do a deal, turn a profit, or make a “killing.”” In other words CEO’s and other business men’s addiction to greed has caused sweatshops. They get this high from making more money, and they’re not going to stop just because some people are dying. Looking at it from a cognitive perspective his way of thinking is being clouded by the high the release of dopamine his brain is releasing.
Behavioral and social psychology would most likely be the best choices to help reduce the number of sweatshops. Conformity could be used to help influence people on what they should not be buying. In other words if a large group of people say they are against sweatshops and won't buy their clothes, more people would do the same. Operant conditioning be used on a group of people, so that they could learn that sweatshops are bad. They would do this by pairing them buying a sweatshop made clothing item with a punishment. The people would then know that every time they buy a sweatshop made item it will result in a punishment.
The field of psychology is important to humanity because it is important that we know people’s thought process and how we could help those who need it. I think knowing what someone might be thing is really helpful in knowing why they do the things they do. Which is something that I’m almost certain everyone has thought about before. Not only that but psychology has helped people who were dealing with mental disabilities. Before psychology everyone thought they were just dumb or something evil had happened to them. However psychology saved the day and let those people know that they were similar to everyone else, the only difference was how their brain functioned. Psychology has been able to help out many people, and I think it will continue to help others.
A take away from this class was that people could act the way they do because of a billion and more other reasons. Everyone has different thought processes, that can be influenced by the smallest things. Although we might not notice every small thing our brain and our eyes do. Which is pretty crazy because they can make us think and do pretty weird thing. I also learned that the brain is really, really complicated and very important. It determines and process everything we see and do for our entire lives. And yes it can get damaged over the years, but it's really cool.
