There have been many Efforts to stop sweatshops in Chicago. Young people and older people have come together to voice their opinions, on anti sweatshop labor. Living in Chicago makes me want to join this kind of groups or just do something to support the cause . For example “Students at the University of Illinois-Chicago are proud to be a part of our campus community. Members of United Students Against Sweatshops Local 15 at UIC are driven by our goal of making UIC live up to its promise of making education accessible and to transform the world in positive ways.” This proves that even big colleges are taking act and doing something about it and they are well known about the situation. They are even going on a 2 day strike to negotiate a fair union contract. They have been one of the many Chicago organizations that have helped the fight against sweatshops. What I find so interesting about this organization is that it’s ran by a lot of young people. Sweatshops groups are all around Chicago either from an activist group or a college like UIC.
According to daily inbox;
“Those in Chicago who wear uniforms to city jobs, such as firefighters, police officers, and maintenance personnel, may soon wear more ethically-produced apparel, thanks to an effort by Chicago Fair Trade activists in the city.” Based on this we can tell how the problem is getting solved little by little. Making changes for job safety either on what they wear is a very good step since it shows how this fair trade activist are taking action According to labor notes; “More than one third of immigrant and low-income workers in Chicago work in sweatshops. That's the conclusion of a study by the Sweatshop Working Group, a coalition of 34 organizations, that set out to document sweatshop abuses across many industries.” This proves that this problem can happen locally, something we never expect. A lot of illegal immigrants come to America looking for a better life . But since they are an easy target for |
sweatshop they end up living a miserable life. Florence kelley chief of state board of factory inspectors found smallpox on a chicago sweatshop. She had an order to inspect 66,000 factories;
“The Illinois Association of Manufacturers, establishing in 1893, seems not to have been in working order until after the new law took effect in July, or to have been too feeble to make any timely opposition. No sooner, however, had we begun to enforce the statute against violators in the tenement houses, by urging their employers to cut off supplies during the epidemic, warning them that goods found in the presence of infection would be summarily destroyed.” This basically means that this chicago factory made their employees, work knowing there was a disease around. They were telling them that they were gonna get something good from it if they kept working. This is important because it shows how factories control their employees. They make them do things that are bad,and are not safe for them. They already in their heads that they should be doing everything since they going to get something good from them. They make them believe that there's no problem around. |
