The field of psychology can be used to positively change the world and achieve my vision of social justice by helping understand the motives behind people's actions and choices. I think this is very important in achieving social justice because social justice depends on the actions we take. Therefore, if someone chooses to stand up for what they believe in, there has to be a why they chose that options. Thus, leading to where psychology plays a role in achieving social justice; it can be used as a way to encourage others to think similarly and take action for what they believe in.
One of the causes why sweatshops still exist is because of people constantly buying stuff; even though, they don’t need a new version of it. According to Peter Noel Murray Ph.D he said, “Most "new" products are not really new at all. They are revisions of products that already exist. iPhone 4S is not a new product, it is a revision of existing iPhones and smartphones in general.” Meaning that although this product was advertised as a “new” product it really wasn’t. In reality it was the same old version with some enhancements. This proves that people buy things they don’t even need a new phone. Thus causing there to be a need for constant production and manufacturing of different products. Another reason why sweatshops are still up and running is because of the seatshop owners. Who most likely suffer from narcissistic personality disorder, because they do not care about what they are doing to their employees. Basically narcissistic personality disorder is when people do not care how their actions are affecting others; which is exactly what the owners do. They know that their workers are suffering, yet do nothing to help. |
We can use psychology to help reduce the amount of people who purchase sweatshops clothes by using the conversion theory, which is part of social psychology. Conversion theory is when a group of people believe in a certain thing, causing the minority's of the group to go along with them. According to Changing Minds it says, “ They may also have become disillusioned with the group purpose, process or leadership and are seeking a viable alternative.” Meaning that people can be persuaded to stop buying those clothes if others say the same. This is important because it can help people stop their unnecessary buying habits. We can also use the third person effect, which would help get the message across to people in a way that they would actually pay attention to such an important message. This is important because people don't usually care about those types of messages, but with the third party effect they will. Not to mention we can use the framing effect and introduced sweatshops by their really bad working conditions. Which would cause people to dislike sweatshops.
The field of psychology is important to humanity because it has helped us understand so many different things. Without psychology we would not know a lot of interesting facts about how we think and why we choose to act the way we do. This is very important because we understand how people are different and how some are willing to do things others won't. Psychology has allowed people to be able to live normal lives by helping them deal with their mental disabilities. So not only did psychology help further understand us as humans, it also helped those suffering. Not to mention the fact that it helps a lot of people cope with problems they might be having and help them resolve their issues. My major takeaway from ap psychology was that we can be influenced by a lot of things. And that was something I found really crazy ! I never knew how easily people can manipulate our brains into thinking what they want us to. Another thing was how many different theories there are behind a lot of our actions. There are so many that I found it really difficult to even remember all of them. |
